Learning Goal: To apply conservation of energy concepts to roller coasters.
Today: Roller Coaster Design. Design and build a marble roller coaster with the following minimum specifications:
- It has two loops, a large one and a small one.
- The marble successfully completes the course on the first try on “Opening Day”.
- Marble must finish horizontally to allow you to measure its final velocity.
- To determine the velocity of the marble at the top of the loops using CoE principles.
- To determine the work done on the marble by friction using CoE principles.
- Create energy bar charts corresponding to 4 points on the coaster: the start, the top of each loop, and the finish.
- DO NOT CUT MY TUBING!! If you want to do that, BUY YOUR OWN!
- Your coaster must be completed in time to get your measurements and tear down. (I need the materials for other classes.)
- Pertinent measurements: Starting height, height of each loop, velocity at the end.
