Studies show that, on average, sending or receiving a text takes approximately 5 seconds of attention, average human reaction time is 0.20 s, and that the average stopping acceleration of a car is 4.6 m/s2.
- Calculate how far a car would travel at residential/school zone speeds (25 mi/hr) during a driver's text.
- Calculate how far that same car would travel in the time it takes your brain to react to a situation.
- Calculate how far that same car would travel from the moment the brakes are applied to when it comes to a complete stop.
- Keeping in mind the assumptions made above (average reaction time in controlled circumstances & full concentration, speed, perfect conditions) discuss your findings in relation to the driving behavior of the typical teenager.
