Learning Goal: Be able to predict which properties determine the motion of a simple harmonic oscillator and what the dependence of the motion is on those properties.
- Given: ring stand, clamp, spring, variety of labeled masses, and other commonly available equipment.
- Create: a spring with a period of exactly one second.
- Analysis (when finished):
- What variables or characteristics of the pendulum determine its period? How do you know?
- What are the limitations and/or assumptions used in creating your vibrating spring? How would this affect its accuracy as a time-keeping device?
- What would a position-time graph of pendulum motion look like? Make a prediction in your notebook. Then work with your team to come up with a way to test your prediction.
- Read for understanding: Sections 11-1 through 11-4. Use that information to complete the Pendulum Challenge.

- Deadline to initiate any test retakes is May 5, scheduled on a first-come basis. I will not consider retakes for anyone who approaches me for the first time after that date. In other words: If you wait until the last week/day/minute to approach me, and I don't have any time available to discuss, you have waited too long.
